Behind Enemy Lines: Spiritual Warfare and The Reality of This Present World

The believer in Jesus Christ is not operating in neutral territory. Scripture makes it clear that this present world is under the influence of a usurper. Satan is called “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4), not by divine appointment, but by the consent of men who have chosen to reject the truth and embrace deception.

From the days of John the Baptist, the kingdom of heaven has “suffered violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:12). This is not poetic language. It reveals a spiritual conflict where earthly systems are influenced and driven by unseen powers. Men seek dominion, but behind them stand principalities and powers—spiritual wickedness in high places.

This is the setting of behind enemy lines and our spiritual warfare. The world is not simply broken—it is occupied.

Behind Enemy Lines: Spiritual Warfare is Not Against Flesh and Blood

The True Nature of the Conflict

The struggle is not political, social, or merely human. The Word of God defines it clearly:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world…” (Ephesians 6:12)

Men may carry out the violence, but they are not the true enemy. They are influenced, directed, and empowered by spiritual forces that oppose God.

Because of this, the weapons of the believer are not physical. The battle is not fought with force, but with truth. As it is written:

“The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4)

The battlefield is the mind. Strongholds are built through deception, and they are torn down through the truth of God’s Word.

Behind Enemy Lines: Spiritual Warfare and The Armor of God

The Only Offensive Weapon Behind Enemy Lines

God has not left His people defenseless. He has provided armor—spiritual protection for a spiritual battle:

  • Truth as a girdle

  • Righteousness as a breastplate

  • Shoes of the gospel of peace for our steps

  • Faith as a shield

  • Salvation as a helmet

But only one piece is offensive:

“The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17)

This is the only weapon used behind enemy lines; Not force, not influence, not control—but the Word of God.

It is through the gospel that strongholds fall and captives are set free.

Behind Enemy Lines: How the World Came Under Darkness

The authority over the earth was given to man (Psalm 115:16). That dominion has never been revoked. Yet men chose to worship the creature rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25), handing influence and control to the enemy.

When Satan tempted Jesus, he offered Him the kingdoms of the world:

“For that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it” (Luke 4:6)

Jesus did not dispute the claim. The control of worldly systems had been surrendered through rebellion and false worship.

This explains the condition of the world today. Kingdoms rise and fall, but behind them operate unseen rulers—spiritual forces influencing nations, as seen in Daniel 10 with the “prince of Persia” and the “prince of Grecia.”

This is the structure of global governance—a world system energized by darkness.

Behind Enemy Lines: The Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of God

Distinguishing the Two while Behind Enemy Lines

A clear understanding of these two kingdoms is essential.

  • The Kingdom of Heaven is physical, earthly, and tied to dominion on the earth.

  • The Kingdom of God is spiritual and cannot be seized by force.

The kingdom of heaven was offered to Israel and rejected. Through violence, it was taken—its authority misused by those who opposed Christ (Matthew 21:38).

But the kingdom of God cannot be taken:

“The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21)

While the kingdom of heaven has been corrupted by violent men, the kingdom of God remains untouched. It exists wherever Christ reigns in the heart.

Believers now live in the kingdom of God while operating in a world where the kingdom of heaven has been seized.

Behind Enemy Lines: Occupy Till He Comes

Jesus described His departure as a nobleman going into a far country to receive a kingdom and return (Luke 19:12). His instruction was simple:

“Occupy till I come.”

This defines the mission in behind enemy lines and our spiritual warfare.

The goal is not to reclaim earthly power. It is not to control governments or systems. The mission is to proclaim the gospel so that men may be saved.

The believer stands in enemy territory, not to conquer land, but to rescue souls.

Behind Enemy Lines: The Coming Victory

This present condition is temporary. The same Christ who was rejected will return. He will bind the strong man, spoil his house, and establish His kingdom on the earth (Matthew 12:29).

The kingdom of God will be manifested physically as the kingdom of heaven, with Christ reigning in righteousness.

Until that day, darkness will increase. Deception will grow stronger. The conflict will intensify.

Yet the outcome is already determined.

Behind Enemy Lines: A Call to Respond

Every person stands in one of two conditions:

  • Either blinded by the god of this world

  • Or delivered into the light of the gospel

Salvation is not found in systems, knowledge, or effort. It is found in a person—Jesus Christ.

He died for sin, was buried, and rose again. Through Him, deliverance from the power of darkness is offered freely.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”

The question is not whether the battle is real. The question is whether you are prepared.

Are you standing in truth, or are you still under the influence of this present darkness?
