Dark Matter and Scripture: The Hidden Forces of the Universe

Based on podcast episode 256 Dark Matter and Dark Energy: Hidden Forces or Spiritual Darkness Revealed?

Understanding Dark Matter and Its Mystery

Modern science acknowledges that nearly 95% of the universe is made up of dark matter and dark energy—substances unseen yet overwhelmingly dominant. According to the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard & Smithsonian, dark matter acts as an invisible gravitational force binding galaxies together, while dark energy accelerates the universe’s expansion. Everything visible—stars, planets, and light—comprises less than five percent of creation.

But what if what science calls “dark” has a deeper meaning in Scripture? The Bible consistently portrays darkness not as neutral, but as a realm of ignorance, sorrow, and wickedness. The Hebrew word ḥōshek signifies obscurity, secret place, misery, destruction, and death.

Could it be that man’s pursuit of these unseen cosmic elements mirrors the spiritual blindness Scripture warns against?

The Biblical Nature of Darkness

In Genesis 1:1-5, darkness existed before light was spoken into being. God divided light from darkness, establishing both a physical and spiritual separation. When Job questioned God’s ways, the Lord responded:

“Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof?” Job 38:19–20

This distinction shows that darkness has boundaries and a designated place. It is not merely the absence of light—it is a condition, sometimes a domain. From the plague of darkness in Egypt (Exodus 10:21–23) to the prophetic darkness of the Day of the Lord (Amos 5:18-20), Scripture connects darkness to judgment, blindness, and separation from God.

When mankind rejects the Light, as written in John 3:19–21, he chooses darkness because his deeds are evil. Perhaps dark matter and dark energy, though framed as physical phenomena, reflect a greater spiritual reality—the unseen rulers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12) that oppose the light of Christ.

Science and the Spiritual Abyss

The Deep and the Bottomless Pit

The Greek word ábyssos—translated “the deep” or “bottomless pit”—means an unbounded gulf, often used to describe the abode of demons. In Luke 8:31, the devils begged Jesus not to command them into “the deep.” In Revelation 9:1-2, the bottomless pit is opened, releasing smoke and darkness upon the earth.

Scientific institutions such as CERN, dedicated to probing the unseen fabric of the universe, may be unknowingly approaching this same abyss. The image of Shiva, the god of destruction, standing at CERN’s entrance raises an unsettling question—does man’s quest to understand dark matter and energy risk breaching spiritual barriers God has set?

Dark Matter , Dark Energy, and Spiritual Forces

If dark matter and dark energy govern most of creation’s structure, why did God allow such a vast portion of the universe to remain hidden? Could this veil of darkness serve to conceal spiritual realms until an appointed time?

In Colossians 1:13–17, Paul declares that all things—visible and invisible—were created by Christ and for Him. Nothing exists outside His sovereignty. Yet Ephesians 6:12 warns that believers wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, and rulers of the darkness of this world. These rulers may operate through forces we cannot see—possibly even through what science calls dark matter.

When the heavens “depart as a scroll” (Revelation 6:12-14), it may signify a tearing of the dimensional veil, revealing that what humanity has labeled “dark” is in fact spiritual. This could correspond with the unlocking of the bottomless pit, releasing entities long restrained from our realm.

The Light of Christ Against the Darkness

While scientists seek truth in particles and equations, the true Light—Jesus Christ—remains the only revelation that pierces both physical and spiritual darkness.

“God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5

Without Christ, man’s pursuit of knowledge becomes a descent into spiritual obscurity. The more he peers into the dark, the more he risks being consumed by it. The same forces that bind galaxies may serve as symbols of spiritual bondage, but in Christ, believers are translated from the power of darkness into His marvelous light (Colossians 1:13).

A Call to the Light

If 95% of the universe is composed of darkness, it should compel us to seek the One who alone commands light to shine out of darkness. Science may claim to uncover mysteries, but Scripture reveals the truth behind them—a cosmic conflict between light and darkness, between God’s order and the rebellion of unseen powers.

The true question is not whether dark matter exists—it does—but what spirit drives mankind to pursue it. Are we uncovering God’s hidden works, or are we being lured toward the abyss Scripture warns about?

There is only one safeguard against deception: Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. He alone rescues from the darkness that pervades both the universe and the human heart.
