The Key to the Abyss: Opening the Bottomless Pit and the Final Deception

Based on Bible Mysteries Podcast Episode 285 - The Key to the Abyss Part 2: The Bottomless Pit, Apollyon, and the Beast System

A cinematic portrayal of a fallen celestial being descending toward a vast fiery chasm while holding a golden key.

The book of Revelation describes a moment unlike any other in human history. A star falls from heaven. A key is given. A prison is opened. What emerges from that abyss brings terror upon the earth and becomes part of the greatest deception mankind has ever known.

Many believers focus on the judgments of Revelation while overlooking the significance of the one who opens the pit. Yet the Key to the Abyss may reveal much about the spiritual battle unfolding behind the scenes and the efforts of both fallen angels and rebellious men to oppose the coming King.

The Key to the Abyss and the Opening of the Bottomless Pit

Revelation 9 begins with a startling event:

“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.” (Revelation 9:1 KJV)

The star appears to represent a personal being rather than a celestial object.

Throughout Scripture, stars are often associated with angelic entities. When this fallen star opens the pit, smoke rises from the abyss and strange creatures emerge to torment those who do not possess the seal of God.

These are not ordinary locusts. Their description combines features of men, women, lions, horses, and scorpions. They operate under a king called Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek—the Destroyer.

The opening of the abyss marks a turning point in the Tribulation period. It reveals that spiritual forces long restrained by God will one day be released according to His sovereign plan.

Why the Key to the Abyss Matters

The abyss is more than a prison. It appears to be a place where certain rebellious angelic beings are confined until the appointed time.

The release of these entities demonstrates that God has not forgotten their rebellion. Their judgment has simply been delayed.

At the same time, the opening of the pit exposes the true nature of Satan's kingdom. The world will be promised enlightenment, power, and salvation through the Beast system, yet what emerges from the abyss brings torment rather than freedom.

This pattern has existed throughout history. Satan continually offers humanity forbidden knowledge, greater power, and independence from God. The result is always destruction.

The Beast, the Abyss, and False Resurrection

One of the most intriguing passages concerning the Beast appears in Revelation 17:

“The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit.” (Revelation 17:8 KJV)

This statement connects the Beast directly to the abyss.

The Antichrist is portrayed as suffering a deadly wound and then returning to life.

This counterfeit resurrection becomes one of the primary reasons the world worships him.

A Counterfeit of Christ

Satan has always sought to imitate God.

Jesus died and rose again. The Beast appears to do the same.

Jesus receives worship because He conquered death. The Beast receives worship because the world believes he has done likewise.

The deception is powerful because it appeals to humanity's oldest desire: the promise of immortality apart from God.

Scripture repeatedly warns that signs and wonders alone are not proof of divine authority. The final world ruler will use supernatural deception to convince mankind that he is worthy of worship.

The Worship of the Beast System

Revelation 13 describes a world united in admiration of the Beast.

Political power, military strength, economic control, and religious authority become concentrated into a single system. Nations willingly surrender authority to him, and the masses marvel at his apparent invincibility.

The question repeatedly asked is:

“Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?” (Revelation 13:4 KJV)

The answer, of course, is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Yet the world will not recognize that truth. Instead, it will be persuaded that resistance to God is both possible and desirable.

The Beast system is not merely political. It is spiritual at its core. It represents humanity's collective attempt to rule apart from God while receiving power from Satan.

The Key to the Abyss and Forbidden Knowledge

From Genesis to Revelation, mankind repeatedly seeks knowledge outside the boundaries established by God.

The Tower of Babel demonstrated humanity's desire to unite in rebellion. The pre-Flood world embraced corruption through angelic interference. End-times prophecy suggests that a similar pattern will return.

The Pursuit of Hidden Dimensions

Modern science increasingly discusses concepts that previous generations would have considered impossible. Theoretical physics explores hidden dimensions, alternate realities, and unseen realms beyond ordinary human perception.

While scientific investigation itself is not evil, Scripture warns against mankind becoming "vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind" (Colossians 2:18).

The danger arises when humanity seeks forbidden knowledge without acknowledging the Creator.

The final rebellion may involve more than political power. It may also involve an attempt to access spiritual realities that God has intentionally concealed.

The Kings of the Earth Unite Against Christ

Psalm 2 provides a remarkable prophetic picture of the final rebellion.

The kings of the earth gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed. They believe they can cast off His authority and establish their own rule.

Revelation reveals the same coalition. Earthly rulers unite with spiritual powers in a desperate attempt to resist the return of Christ.

Their efforts are doomed from the beginning.

The Lord laughs at their rebellion not because it is insignificant, but because it is futile.

No amount of technology, military power, genetic manipulation, or spiritual deception can overcome the King of kings.

The Final Outcome of the Key to the Abyss

The opening of the abyss is not the victory of darkness. It is the exposure of darkness.

God allows mankind to pursue its rebellion to its ultimate conclusion so that His justice and righteousness may be fully displayed.

The same pit that releases judgment will eventually become a prison once again.

Satan and his kingdom will not inherit the earth. Christ will.

Isaiah foresaw the day when the Lord would punish both the powers in heaven and the kings of the earth. Their rebellion will end. Their kingdoms will fall. Their deception will be exposed.

The Key to the Abyss serves as a reminder that the greatest threat facing humanity is not technology, politics, or world events. It is spiritual deception.

The answer is not found in secret knowledge or human innovation. It is found in the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone conquered death and alone possesses the true keys of hell and of death.

As the world moves closer to the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, believers should remember that our hope is not in the systems of men. Our hope is in the coming King.

Be sure to look up, for our redemption draws near.
