The Rise of the Little Gods: A Biblical Warning to the Nations

By Scott Mitchell

In the Garden, the serpent's promise to Eve was both subtle and seductive: “Ye shall be as gods” (Genesis 3:5). This statement, spoken by the adversary himself, was not merely a lie—it was a seed of rebellion that has taken root throughout the history of mankind. The desire to ascend, to dethrone the Most High and establish autonomy, has not ceased. Today, this ancient ambition has manifested in elite circles—individuals who, knowingly or not, pursue the same position that Lucifer sought (Isaiah 14:13-14).

These elites, propped up by wealth, influence, and secret knowledge, operate not as mere men but as self-styled “little gods,” echoing the spirit of those judged in Psalm 82: “I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men…” The context of this psalm reveals the Divine Council—beings placed in authority who betrayed their commission. Jesus later invokes this scripture in John 10:34-36 to expose the hypocrisy of those who accused Him of blasphemy while elevating themselves.

Idolatry, Devils, and the Corruption of Nations

Paul exposes the tragic exchange in Romans 1:25: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator...” This deliberate suppression of truth in favor of idolatry has always brought corruption. The Hebrew people were warned not to follow “the host of heaven” (Deuteronomy 4:19), yet history reveals their continual seduction by the gods of the nations.

The Greek word daimonion (δαιμόνιον) underscores this deception. It does not refer merely to grotesque spirits but to spiritual entities—the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim giants—who demand worship and serve as emissaries of Satan. Paul connects these dots in 1 Corinthians 10:20-21, warning believers not to participate in the table of devils: “I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils… ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.”

Psalm 106:37-39 reveals the outcome: “Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils... and the land was polluted with blood.” This pattern—worship, idolatry, and bloodshed—persists in different forms today.

The Divine Council and Human Aspiration

Psalm 82 offers a rare glimpse into the heavenly court—a Divine Council of celestial beings accountable for the oversight of nations. Yet these beings, like the elites they inspired, rebelled. God’s judgment is final: they will fall. Michael Heiser’s work on this subject brings clarity to the spiritual hierarchy and its role in biblical cosmology, while 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 draws the ultimate distinction: “Though there be that are called gods… to us there is but one God, the Father... and one Lord Jesus Christ.”

Christ’s authority eclipses all others, yet the global elites persist in their ambition to impose divine rule on earth. This parallels the imperial cult of Rome, where emperors were deified. Today, leaders and influencers embrace transhumanism, occult philosophy, and ritual practices as they inch toward a one-world system reminiscent of the Tower of Babel.

Modern Idolatry and the Blood of Innocents

What the ancients called sacrifice, the modern world sanitizes under progressive terms. Abortion, human trafficking, and ritualistic abuse—these are the quiet echoes of Molech’s furnace. The gods have not changed; only the methods have.

1 Corinthians 10 draws the line: there can be no spiritual neutrality. Aligning with the “little gods” of this world—whether knowingly or not—places one in opposition to the Creator.

The worship they crave is not metaphorical. It is power, control, and adoration, redirected from the Most High to fallen beings and the humans who serve them. This is the infrastructure of Antichrist: spiritual, political, and economic control centralized in rebellion against God.

Conclusion: The War is Spiritual, the Kingdom is Eternal

The patterns are unmistakable. From the temptation in Eden to the divine rebellion in Psalm 82, from the deification of emperors to the technocratic elites of today—mankind’s appetite for godhood mirrors the sin that cast Lucifer down.

Yet the Word of God remains the final authority. The true God still rules among the nations, and judgment awaits all who exalt themselves against Him. Let the believer take heed: our battle is not with flesh and blood but with powers and principalities (Ephesians 6:12).
