Based on Bible Mysteries Podcast episode 267: In the Stone: A Song That Accidentally Preached the Gospel

A song from 1979—In the Stone by Earth, Wind & Fire—was never meant to teach Scripture. Yet its lyrics echo realities that the Word of God has already established. God often leaves His mark where men never intend to place it. Creation itself bears witness, and sometimes so does creativity.
The Bible makes clear that stone is not just a material—it is a message. And that message points to Christ.
Written in the Stone and the God Who Reveals Himself
Psalm 118:21–22 says:
“The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.”
This is not poetry alone—it is prophecy. Jesus Christ is the rejected stone who became the chief cornerstone.
The phrase written in the stone speaks of permanence. God does not revise truth.
He does not update righteousness. What He has spoken stands forever.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
Truth is not discovered by wandering minds. It is revealed by a living Word.
John 1:1–4 declares:
“In the beginning was the Word… In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”
That light is not hidden. It shines, and it stands—like stone.
Written in the Stone and the Meaning of the Word “Stone”
The Hebrew word for stone is אֶבֶן (eben). It carries deep meaning.
Contained within eben are two words:
אָב (ab) — Father
בֵּן (ben) — Son
Both Father and Son are found in the word stone. That is no accident.
Jesus said:
“I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30)
The cornerstone is not merely a symbol—it is a Person. Christ is the stone that holds all truth together.
Written in the Stone and the Light That Shines
The song says:
“In the stone, the light is shining.”
Scripture says:
“That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” (John 1:9)
Light is not philosophy. Light is Christ.
Men search for meaning in emotion, experience, and self-expression. But truth is not hidden inside us—it is revealed to us.
1 John 4:9 says:
“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”
Love is not vague. Love has a name. His name is Jesus.
Written in the Stone and the Coming Kingdom
Daniel saw a stone cut without hands:
“Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands… and the stone… became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.” (Daniel 2:34–35)
That stone is Christ. That mountain is His Kingdom.
Later Daniel writes:
“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed.” (Daniel 2:44)
Every kingdom of man will fall. Every system built without Christ will crumble. But the Kingdom built on the Stone will never move.
Jesus said:
“Whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.” (Matthew 21:44)
There is no neutrality with Christ. He is either the foundation you stand on, or the stone you fall against.
Written in the Stone and Strength in Christ
The song speaks of strength being written in the stone.
Scripture agrees—but it defines where that strength comes from.
“Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
Strength is not self-confidence.Strength is God-dependence.
Paul reminds us:
“They drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4)
Christ is not only the cornerstone—He is the sustaining stone.
Written in the Stone and Never Alone
The song repeats:
“Never you’ll be alone.”
Jesus said:
“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20)
God does not abandon His people. He does not forget His promises.
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:5)
That promise is not emotional comfort—it is covenant truth. It is written in the stone.
Written in the Stone and the God Who Is
When God revealed Himself to Moses, He said:
“I AM THAT I AM.” (Exodus 3:14)
God does not evolve. He does not adjust. He simply is.
Truth does not bend to time.
Truth stands like stone.
Jesus Christ is:
The Word made flesh
The rejected stone
The cornerstone
The Rock of salvation
The Light of the world
And His truth is not written in sand. It is written in the stone.
Conclusion: Written in the Stone
Earth, Wind & Fire did not write Scripture. But God does not need permission to leave His fingerprint on human creativity. Sometimes truth echoes even when men do not intend to speak it.
The song says:
“Love is written in the stone.”
Scripture says:
“God is love.” (1 John 4:8)
And that love was revealed in a Person—the Stone the builders rejected, now lifted as Lord of all.
Truth is not hidden.
Truth is not lost.
Truth is not changing.
Truth is written in the stone.
